May 7, 2013 Intuition (feat. Slug) – Buzzkill
I originally wasn’t going to post this song because it was released over three years ago (Intuition’s Girls Like Me) and I don’t know much about Intuition but I’ve had it on repeat for months now so it’s going on the blog. The song centers around the idea that once you’ve achieved fame, and become numb to it, you can never recapture your old magic. Kind of like sex on ecstacy, or so I’ve heard. The infectious hook and soothing guitar are too nice. Intuition comes through with some witty self-deprecating lines and Slug does what Slug does: rap about struggles with music, substances, and women. Overall it is a great song which actually has a feel-good vibe despite its message. Check it out!

April 30, 2013 Clams Casino – Bookfiend (feat. DOOM)
Well this is a pleasant surprise. The legendary MF DOOM has shed the MF and linked up with super-producer Clams Casino on this new track. Clams’ style is much different from the traditional Madlib soundscape that has become inextricably linked with MF DOOM, but this song just flat out works. DOOM’s flow is almost non existent, but it pairs nicely with the spacey production and his lyrics are on point.

April 14, 2013 Chance The Rapper – Nana
Chance The Rapper is back with a new video! The concept of the video is simple and brilliant. Chance is given $5,000 dollars to create a music video, and he spends it the same way you would: on a giant chicken suit and lunch with Childish Gambino. ‘NaNa’ is another song off the upcoming Acid Rap and I cannot wait. I love the flow Chance uses to open up his first verse, and the hook is oddly catchy for how simple it is.

April 11, 2013 The Last Emperor – Secret Wars I
The Last Emperor has been floating around the rap world for a while now, but does not get the recognition he deserves. Today, Tour De Vaap brings you a throw back from 1998. ‘Secret Wars I’ is one of the more creative tracks I have ever heard and I don’t want to give away the surprise. Let’s just say everyone from Common to Wolverine makes an appearance. If you are a fan of hip-hop, comic books, or both, you’re gonna love this track….we guarantee it. Download it here and get your Spidey on.

April 5, 2013 Gorilla Warfare Tactics – drugDILLA
The return of the kings. In early 2011 I fell in love with Gorilla Warfare Tactics when they dropped their debut EP, Premier. Great production and occasional rapping from Cake x Crumbs (who are now known as Imagine1984) combined with the Dilla’s old-school, confident flow led to an amazing project. After a two year hiatus, GWT is back. Last night they dropped ‘drugDILLA,’ the first single off their upcoming album, Zoology. The song, built around an ode to Tribe, encapsulates the GWT sound. Head-knodding sample, 90s sounding hook, and vivid lyricism from Dilla. Download this song and check the boys out on facebook and twitter.
“Took awhile for Dilla to script songs/Made a transition boy went Gorilla to King Kong / Now I pound my gorilla chest, swing from the tower top / Bullets to the dome can never make the fucking power stop”

March 24, 2013 Mike Champoux – One
Seattle hip-hop continues to roll. This is the first song I’ve heard by Mike Champoux, and I’ve had it on repeat for a couple of days now. On his self-produced track ‘One’ Champoux delivers a nice mix of introspection and inspiration which seems to be a staple of the Seattle underground. The internet is full of aspiring rappers and this is how you separate yourself from the pack. Anyone can rap about women and weed, but it takes courage to paint an honest picture of your life, dreams, and struggles. ‘One’ is the third single off the upcoming project L.I.F.E which drops on the 28th. The other two singles are dope as well so give them a look. Here’s the download.

March 19, 2013 Jhene Aiko – Everything Must Go
I first heard Jhene Aiko on Kendrick Lamar’s Overly Dedicated. She sang a mesmerizing chorus on ‘Growing Apart (To Get Closer)’ and I was hooked. Since then Aiko has been signed to No I.D’s label and on Saturday she released a track produced by the legend himself. ‘Everything Must Go’ features smooth guitar which complements her gentle voice perfectly. With a beautiful voice and jaw-dropping looks, my future wife Jhene Aiko is set to shine. Download the song here.

March 18, 2013 Chance the Rapper – Acid Rain
Chance the Rapper is a 19 year old phenom hailing from Chicago. Despite residing in a city with a deep pool of talent, Chance managed to gain local, and then national attention with his first project, 10 Day. 10 Day was the result of a ten day suspension from school and it is well worth your time. ‘Acid Rain’ is the first single off his upcoming tape Acid Rap, which drops April 30th. ‘Acid Rain’ features a mellow beat which highlights Chance’s creative lyrics. He’s a deep thinker with a distinct voice, and he seems destined for stardom. Give the young man a listen.

March 5, 2013 Cosmo Jarvis – She’s Got You
Ukuleles and recorders coming right at you! Normally I will be sticking to hip-hop, but here is a great song from British singer/song-writer Cosmo Jarvis. ‘She’s Got You’ was the first single from his debut album, Humasyouhitch/Sonofabitch. I will be in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the next four months and this is the first song my host brother showed me. I didn’t know anyone besides the legendary Israel Kamakawiwoʻole could make the ukulele look so cool. The Star Wars talk at the beginning of the video is perfect. Good look getting this out of your head! Check out Cosmo Jarvis here. Download the song here. Sorry there is no picture, my internet connection is not great here.

February 20, 2013 Shad – I Get Down
I was fourteen when some friends in middle school put me on to Shad and I quickly became a huge fan. There aren’t many emcees out there who can rival his lyrical ability and even fewer create tracks with such thought provoking and generally positive messages. With a dazzling array of multi-syllabic rhymes, internal rhymes, and alliteration, Shad is kind of like a Canadian Elzhi. ‘I Get Down’ lives on his 2005 debut album When This Is Over and it is a masterpiece. Sonically it is on par with Eminem’s legendary verse on ‘Renegade,’ except it lasts for three verses. I met Shad after a show a couple years ago and he was about as down to Earth as they come. Grab this song on iTunes or download it here.
