February 17, 2013 Futurebirds – Virginia Slims
Futurebirds have always been a favorite here at Tour De Vaap. The band has a real summer evening feel to their music. It’s Americana meant for sitting on a porch with some friends as the sun sets, sipping on a few beers and enjoying each others company. No worries, just good friends and good memories. After releasing an amazing debut album, Hampton’s Lullaby, the band is ready to release their sophomore album, just in time for the spring album rush. The first single released, “Virginia Slims” will make any Futurebirds fan feel right at home, and is sure to melt those winter blues away as the band jams about lighting up, “we’ve been drawin’ heavy since 1997″ and making big plans that never quite come to fruition. Multiple electric guitars and the constant signature bottleneck sliding guitar overwhelm the song with warm distorted overtones as the group sings their harmonies like no other. The 60s had The Band, the 90s had some greats like the Drive By Truckers and Wilco. Now, we’ve got Futurebirds and I couldn’t be happier about it. Their new album Baba Yaga is out April 16th. In the meantime check out the single blow or download it here.

June 7, 2011 Futurebirds – Johnny Utah
What do you get when you combine friends, beer and a warm sumer night on a porch in Athens Georgia? Futurebirds apparently. This amazing Alt-country band is one I’ve been meaning to do a post on for a while. Their sound takes a familiar genre and twists it into a hazy mix of psychedelic rock and country twang. But what makes this band so addicting (in addition to their sound) is that the band manages to sound like they’re having a blast playing their music and still keep their musical integrity. Every song is filled with soul and joy and I really don’t think you can ask much more of a band than that. To give you a taste of this band, here’s the opening track from their debut album Hampton’s Lullaby, “Johnny Utah” and one of my favorites from their first EP “Dirty D.” If you like these tunes, I’d also recommend, “Ski Chalet” “Megachills” and “Aquarium Floor.” In the meantime, enjoy and be sure to check out their latest release Via Flamina. -M.
