05/04/11 Alex Winston – Pull My Heart Away
“throw me out of the side of a plane
And I’ll just see where I land”
I don’t quite get Alex Winston. Her voice is high and at times annoying. Her music isn’t all that refreshing or innovative. But damn is it catchy. I first heard her as a guest member of The Knocks, fellow members of the Heavy Roc label. Now she has her own mini-LP, Sister Wife, which came out in March and the song of the same name has been making its way through the online circuit. But it’s not her stint with The Knocks or her new LP or even her Joanna Newsomesque squeals. It’s her amazing cover songs, specifically, “Pull My Heart Away” by Jack Peñate. Jack’s original is already an amazing song with beautiful lyrics, echoey guitars and an energetic voice that reminds me of Robert Smith. But on her Basement Covers EP, Winston takes the song in both a familiar direction and completely transforms it. While it starts off simple enough, just a piano and her voice, the song slowly transforms into a symphony of voices, drums, claps and snaps that I just can’t get out of my head. The whole EP is free and it’s full of similarly catchy covers of artists ranging from The Rolling Stones to Mumford & Sons. Not only is it full of amazing covers, but it is self-produced solely by Winston in her Detroit basement (vocals, guitar, drums, the whole shebang). All I have left to say is, this talented girl really knows her way around a cover song. – M. Kauf
